The BBC News article, “AI tools that take notes for GPs could miss vital information, study suggests”[2] raises another concern about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare.
It reports that researchers from the University of Edinburgh have warned that AI-powered medical note-taking systems may overlook important aspects of patient consultations.
Whilst these systems may improve efficiency, they should be used cautiously because they don’t always capture the fuller picture of the patient-doctor/nurse interaction.
As the healthcare professional remains responsible for the accuracy of any consultation records then there remains the risk of errors, including missed symptoms, incorrect drug dose etc. This could lead to a claim for clinical negligence.
