The man is in his 20s and has a first class degree. Prior to the accident, he had a good job, being highly regarded by his employer, and was in a steady relationship. However, his life changed in an instant when the car hit him at a busy junction. Although it was accepted that he ran across the road and was probably wearing headphones at the time, the speed at which the motorist was going meant that his case was strong.
Following the accident, he had undergone 17 brain operations and numerous other surgical procedures to repair his orthopaedic injuries. However, due to his own strength of character and the tireless support of his family, he is now able to get to his feet and walk with difficulty, and can also make himself a cup of tea.
Following negotiations, the High Court approved a settlement of his claim whereby the motorist’s insurers agreed to compensate him on the basis of 70 per cent liability.
